Those Little Gaps

The *Gregs’ house was burgled recently and God revealed a spiritual truth from the event. The Bible says, “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy…”John 10:10. And of course, those thieves stole from them and destroyed their property though no life was lost and all thanks to God for His protection. However, God drew my attention to something very important and applicable to our spiritual lives. There was a GAP in the wall right beside the door leading into her courtyard. Though it was part of the architectural design, it was not safe. Her father had set up a rickety form of “protector” to close the gap to ensure safety as well as preserve the architect’s design that was meant for ventilation. But it was not safe enough because the burglars plied through her father’s little workshop in the courtyard, took whatever they could find and cut through the “protector”. Having opened the gap, they put their hands through, unlocked the door and let themselves into the house.
We leave little gaps open for the devil to use as a stronghold of attack in our lives. Secret sins give way for the enemy to break into our lives. We overlook little dirty habits like lying, cheating, pilfering, malice, anger, greed etc and these are still sinful in God’s sight. The Bible says, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”1 Peter 5:8. This post is an exhortation for us to be mindful of our actions, thoughts and speech. To be watchful of the little gaps we leave open for the enemy to sneak in on us and hurt us.
Confess and forsake your intentional, unintentional, secret or open sins. Sin thrives in secrecy. Accept God’s forgiveness and make amends. Have you been thinking that sin is “not so bad”? Think again and be warned. Close these gaps and do not give the devil a foothold so that he won’t break in. The Psalmist knew the goodness of a clear conscience; you can rest in God’s arms of protection. He said in Psalm 4:8, “I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; for You alone O Lord, make me dwell in safety.”
